Our Process
Preparation
Many authors don’t realize they can retain or request their audiobook rights — even if they’ve already signed with a publisher. In many cases, especially with smaller or traditional publishers, audiobook production isn’t part of the standard publishing package. All it takes is a simple ask to clarify who holds the rights. Once confirmed, authors are often free to produce their own audiobook and reach an entirely new audience.
Before we begin production, request the following items from your publisher:
-
Audio rights
-
Final digital manuscript
-
Artwork files (if available)
Production
Step 1: Pre-Production Consultation
You will meet with a SunLoft producer to review your manuscript, discuss your needs, and
answer any questions you might have. Do you feel that? It's empowerment.
Step 2: Recording
We'll get set up to record your own book with our easy-to-use home recording kit (that you
get to keep). Optionally, we can select a voice-over artist from our network of professional
voice-over artists. Once a narrator is selected, we'll solidify a production schedule so you
know exactly what to expect every step of the way.
Step 3: Editing and Proofreading
In this step, the you or the voice-over artist will submit the audio files to SunLoft Media for
editing. We'll read along with the recordings checking overall quality, reading accuracy,
pronunciation, and file specifications. During this time, we recommend purchasing a unique
ISBN for your audiobook from Bowker (see our FAQs for more about this).
Step 4: Pickups & Mastering
If needed, a list of corrections (called "pickups") will be sent to you or the voice-over artist. Once the corrections have been implemented, SunLoft Media will master the audio to ensure the files are polished and ready for distribution.
Step 5: File Delivery or Publishing
SunLoft Media will either deliver the final files directly to you, or publish your files to the industry-leading platform of your choice.
Convenience & Peace of Mind
SunLoft Media handles every step of the process, making sure your book will exceed your expectations and reach an entirely new audience. Our top priority is always quality and the satisfaction of our authors and readers.
